By: Robert Davis
NFL Combine Stats: 40-yard dash - 4.79, 225 bench press - 23 reps, vertical jump - 37"
Marcedes Lewis came to UCLA with huge expectations and definitely lived up to the hype. After barely playing as a freshman, Lewis became a legitimate weapon for the Bruins, and improved every year in the program. As a sophomore he caught 30 balls for 377 yards and three touchdowns. As a junior, his numbers jumped to 32 catches for 402 yards and seven touchdowns. Lewis saved the best for last, winning the Mackey Award for the nations best tight end after hauling in 58 balls for 741 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Lewis is a complete tight end prospect. He has excellent size for the position, but combines that with excellent athleticism and quickness. As a receiver, he is a big play threat. His athleticism allows him to make plays all over the field, but his size allows him to be a major red zone threat. He knows how to use his frame to gain position on the defender to make the play. As a blocker he has the size and shows the willingness to work to keep his man out of the play.
As a blocker, Lewis has improved steadily over his career. Once a liability, he is no longer. He can be a good blocker but he's going to need to get stronger to drive players off the ball. He is good in space with his agility, but when locked up in one on one situations he can be pushed around. He also has the habit of not showing up at times, but that could be attributed to the inconsistency at quarterback for most of his career.
Lewis has a very bright NFL future. He has all the tools to be a pro bowl tight end, and could make an immediate impact in the league. He has not lived up to expectations since the end of the regular season, which has helped junior Vernon Davis overtake him on some peoples boards as the top tight end in the draft. Lewis was non existent in the Sun Bowl against Northwestern and again in the Senior Bowl. Lewis should still hear his name called within the first 40 picks, and could end up landing in the second half of the first round.
