Jason Avant WR 6'1 212 Michigan
By: Robert Davis
Avant moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore, finishing the season with 47 catches for 772 yards, and two touchdowns. He earned All Big 10 2nd team honors that season. As a junior he again was named to the All Big 10 2nd team, despite his numbers dropping. He caught 38 balls for 447 yards and three touchdowns. Avant closed his career strong, becoming a 1st team Big 10 selection after hauling in 74 balls for 936 yards and eight touchdowns. Avant also got it done in the classroom, being named Academic All Big 10 three consecutive years.
Jason Avant is built very well, and knows how to use his body. At a solid 212lbs, he is not afraid to go over the middle and take a hit. He also knows how to shield off the defender to make the grab downfield in coverage. Avant is fearless and will not back away from anyone on the football field. Avant has also shown excellent hands and rarely drops a catchable ball. He is also very intelligent and always puts in the work to get the job done.
The only true knock on Avant's game is his lack of deep speed. He will not beat anyone off the line and blow them away downfield. It limits him to an intermediate receiver, and teams are always looking for a gamechanger, so it knocks him down on some boards.
Jason Avant may never be a standout playmaker, but if you are looking for a tough #2 receiver, Avant is your man. He will do everything necessary to help his team, and should be a very good NFL receiver for a long time. He broke his hand at Michigan's Pro Day, and was unable to alleviate teams concerns about his speed. He only carries a second or third round grade, but may outplay some players draft ahead of him.
