Darrell Hackney

NFL Draft News

Darrell Hackney QB 6' 239 UAB
By: Robert Davis

Darrell Hackney has been a true gunslinger at UAB, making a name for himself because of his ability to let it fly. In his first two seasons as a Blazer, he threw for 3,636 yards, 22 touchdowns to 13 picks, but completed just under 51% of his passes. Things began to come together as a junior when he played full time, throwing for 3,070 yards, while completing 55% of his passes and throwing for 26 touchdowns to just eight interceptions. Hackney went out on top, with his best season coming as a senior. He had career highs with a 62.7% completion percentage and 3,180 yards, and had a 22/12 TD/INT ratio.

There is not a single quarterback in this draft that has an arm like Hackney. As soon as he is on an NFL roster, he will have one of the best arms in the league. He can gun it into tight coverage or let it fly down the field. He is also a bull on the football field. Defenders have a hard time bringing him down in the pocket because of his bulk and strength., and unwillingness to go down.

Hackney plays very strong on the field, but he has a tendency to pack on a few extra pounds. He'll need to keep himself in top shape to be ready to play. He also is very short for the position, checking out just a hair under 6' at the combine. On the field he has had problems with consistency on a throw to throw basis. Passes sail on him and he'll underthrow balls even when he sets up in the pocket. Hackney also tends to rely on his arm too much. He feels he can throw it through defenders and coverage to complete passes, and that will not cut it in the league.

Darrell Hackney has the talent and toughness to succeed in the NFL. He will have to show he's willing to put in the work to keep himself in shape, and he will need some time and quality coaching to be more consistent on the football field. His lack of size pushes him to the second day, but he will stick on an NFL roster.
