Antwan Allen CB 5’10 180 Iowa

Antwan Allen has been a mainstay in the Iowa secondary since he set foot on campus. In 2002, Allen was a Freshman All American after posting 60 tackles and two picks. As a sophomore, his numbers were almost identical, finishing with two more picks, and 61 tackles. He improved on his interception total as a junior, picking off four passes to go with 54 tackles. This season, teams looked the other way, but he still managed to get in on 60 tackles, despite missing two games.

Allen may be one of the better pure corners in the draft this year. He has excellent agility and the ability to turn and not lose ground on the receiver. He’s not just a cover corner though, he loves to mix it up at the line of scrimmage and make plays in the running game. He is aggressive in all facets of the game.

His toughness and aggression will work against him at the next level because of his lack of size. Allen simply is not big or strong enough to throw his body around the way he does. He will lose out against bigger receivers and may be relegated to nickel duty because of his frame. Allen was suspended for the opener this year for a fight with an Iowa St. student that left the studen with a broken jaw.

Allen's lack of size will draw a lot of teams away from him with an early pick, but whoever gets him is getting a solid football player. There are quite a few corner/safety hybrids in this years draft, but so Allen has value in that he is a true cover corner. His incident with the Iowa St. student will be looked into just to make sure it is not a sign of future problems. He may only be able to provide coverage in nickel package, but he looks good in the fourth round range.
